Game Dev Clockwatchers Jumps into JRPGs with Heroes of Drakemire™
Independent developer Clockwatchers is launching a 30+ hour JRPG-style single-player adventure called Heroes of Drakemire™. The game is slated to be released on Steam for PC and the Steam Deck on October 26th 2023.
Heroes of Drakemire™ follows a party of quirky adventurers through an epic fantasy quest to save the world from sinister magic. Along the way they’ll face dangers that test the bonds of family, friends, and destiny. True to the genre, the game is also packed with side-quests to keep the adventure going. Heroes of Drakemire™ has a unique look and feel, but the turn-based gameplay and dialogue-forward story should be familiar to classic RPG fans.
Producer and programmer Marc Slabbinck wanted to create a JRPG since he first encountered them in the early 90s. However, he chose to ground this game in a more familiar setting. “While growing up in Europe,” he says, “my grandmother would read me fairy-tales and stories from the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. This is where the setting from the game came from—a world of heroes, knights, dragons, and ogres.”
Development of the game stretched across the COVID-19 pandemic, and according to writer Corodon Fuller this informed the game’s themes. “Most of the writing happened in 2021, after we’d spent the last year hearing the word ‘hero’ constantly on the news. This game was a chance to think about what that word actually means, different people’s relationships to the idea of heroism, and what it costs them.” Corodon adds, “Marc gave me a lot of freedom to develop the story around the key elements he had in mind. I hope I paid that back by giving the characters a lot of personality, and a story that will resonate with people.”
Heroes of Drakemire™ is a party-based game with turn-based combat. The characters who come and go in the party have dozens of combat skills that they can learn and upgrade by leveling up. The game contains more than 50 isometric maps, including various cities.
Heroes of Drakemire™ is the product of a three-year development process. Clockwatchers founder Marc Slabbinck came up with the initial ideas with the help of his son, Maximilian. Acting as the programmer, Slabbinck assembled a team to make the game a reality. The game features graphic design by Leonardo Ariza Ardila, animations by Andrey Panov, and music and sound design by Leon Riskin. Corodon Fuller wrote the story and dialogue. Radoslaw Wieczorek polished the game as lead quality assurance tester.
The scheduled release date is January, 2024. Heroes of Drakemire™ will sell for $19.99, with a 15% launch discount for the first week of release.
